stand up

my stand up career began in 1996 and since then i’ve released four albums, two stand up specials and hosted a weekly stand up showcase in brooklyn that eventually became a stand up series that ran for two seasons on a streaming network that no longer exists.

below you’ll find some of that stuff and eventually maybe i’ll post more of it, once i figure out how to upload memories from my brain into the cloud.

One Angry Night in November

a few days after the presidential election of 2016, i had… a lot of thoughts. i mean, who didn’t?

so i recorded a seventeen minute ep of said thoughts and gave it away for free... well not totally free. at the time, people had to sign up for a mailing list, but who doesn't love mailing lists?

Furry Dumb Fighter

in 2016, i also released my third album. seven more and someone gets a free sandwich.

it was well liked by critics, although some felt i spent too much time criticizing the kardashian family, but really how much time is too much for a family of televised narcissists?

furry dumb fighter is available on vinyl and wherever audio can be digitally placed into a telephone or computer machine.

Brooklyn

brooklyn was released in october of 2014 and it's called brooklyn because that is where i recorded it.

the av club called my mind "thoughtful," which is theoretically what minds are. you don't have to be from brooklyn to enjoy it and if you like puppets then watch it on netflix.

also it made ny magazine’s year end list of best stand up specials that year.

it’d be weird if it made the list for a different year, like 1981.

since it's called brooklyn, it seemed only right to produce a limited edition vinyl record of farm to turntable artisanal jokes mouthcrafted by a locally sourced comedy person.

it was pressed in brooklyn at brooklyn phono and includes artwork from the talented mike mitchell... who is not from brooklyn... because not everything in brooklyn is from brooklyn anymore.

the album version of brooklyn was nominated for a grammy in 2015, which is either a testament to the enduring power of vinyl or voters mistook it for the soundtrack of the oscar nominated film with the same name.

It is currently out of print, but that is because making records is hard work as this video can attest to.

Comedy Person

my first stand up special, comedy person, premiered in 2011 on comedy central.

now it can be found on itunes, but with a small typo. see if you can spot it.

here's an animated extra about medieval times that was included on the dvd of comedy person, but since dvds are now only used as really cheap frisbees to blind dogs with, let’s just put it here.

night train with wyatt cenac

the show ran for two seasons on the streaming service seeso and when that went away, the content was sold to starz.

it was an attempt to capture the energy of the weekly show that i hosted in brooklyn for five years at a venue called littlefield. each week, the show’s producer marianne ways would curate a diverse showcase of performers in the hopes that we could create a space where both onstage and in the audience people felt seen and represented.

donwill would dj and hangout onstage, like a one man house band. we tried to create a kind of ramshackle budget late night show, where guests and performers included janelle james, questlove, violet gray, michelle wolf, matteo lane, sasheer zamata, brooks wheelan, eugene mirman, jon benjamin, joel kim booster, black thought, jean grae, john hodgman, marcella arguello and many more.

it doesn’t appear to be on starz anymore, but hopefully it will stumble its way back on the internet.
